Creating a Minimalist Style in a One Bedroom Apartment

In order to get a spacious, bright, and functional space in a small home, you need to go through several stages - from a carefully thought-out remodeling of the room to precisely selected locations for furniture and equipment. Indeed, finishing in a minimalist style in a one-bedroom apartment is a difficult task, but the result is worth it because, in the end, you will get a light and comfortable living space in which peace and coziness will reign.

Subtypes of minimalism for a one-bedroom apartment

High-tech

The first and perhaps the most modern variety of minimalism is the high-tech style, which uses modern materials—plastic and metal. Dark, strict tones are allowed, but light ones are not welcome. Gloss and metallic shine are the first signs of the style. Ergonomics and laconicism, simplicity, and functionality—this is the motto of high-tech.

Eco-minimalism

Minimalism distinguishes a special style, the philosophy of which is to use only natural materials and components. It requires more greenery throughout the apartment, more natural decorative elements, more naturalness, and environmental friendliness. You can even make a small fountain or imitation of a pond. Light plays a crucial role in eco-minimalism, so the windows are not covered with curtains or blinds, and in addition to them, many artificial light sources are installed.

Japanese minimalism

The special philosophy of this style is to use a minimum of simple things—low furniture and simple screens to divide the space. Only natural materials and a large amount of light should contribute to slow, serene contemplation and give peace to all people in the apartment. Tranquility, open space, and simple, natural forms are the main features of minimalism, which has absorbed elements of the Japanese philosophy of life.

Scandinavian minimalism

Frosty northern Scandinavia gave us its own subspecies of minimalism. Strict forms, an abundance of natural materials—wood and stone—plant ornaments in decorative elements, a combination of green and white colors, and the reflection of cold white light from surfaces are all signs of a simple and northernly severe style called Scandinavian minimalism.

The color scheme of a one-bedroom apartment in the style of minimalism

Minimalism is a simple and strict style; therefore, it implies monochrome in color. Gray, black, and white are three basic colors used in minimalism. The main color is considered to be white. There are examples of apartments decorated only in light shades. Moreover, in these projects, everything is done in light colors, from wall decoration to furniture and decorative elements.

However, a monochromatic space can be boring, so designers advise diluting it by emphasizing some things that attract attention. By placing a brown table in the center of a light room, you can focus attention on it, thereby improving the perception of space. One of the main rules for choosing a color for finishing rooms in the minimalist style implies that the details are always darker than the main design elements, made in light or neutral colors. An excellent result is achieved by a combination of white and muted tones - beige, gray, and light brown.

Stages of one-bedroom apartment renovation in minimalist style

1. Reconstruction

First of all, you need to understand what kind of living space is needed. Usually, walls are immediately knocked down if they are not load-bearing. You can remove the partition between the room and the hallway and also demolish the wall separating the kitchen from the bedroom. Options are selected based on the features of the room. As a result, after demolishing the partitions, you get a studio apartment.

2. Repair

The second stage is repairing the room. Minimalism allows the use of natural materials—stone, wood, glass, and plastic. The colors are chosen calmly, usually white, gray, black, beige, brown, and similar. The surfaces should be smooth, finished with plaster, or pasted over with plain wallpaper. In all designs, the lines are straight.

The floor in an apartment decorated in the minimalist style should be single-level and covered, for example, with linoleum with a simple pattern or laminate. There should be no steps or changes in floor level. Carpeting is also suitable for a minimalist one-bedroom apartment, but it should be monochrome. It is best to make the ceilings glossy and monochromatic. Light ceilings visually increase the space, which is an undoubted plus in small rooms.

3. Light

Light is one of the designer's main tools. In the minimalist style, light also plays an important role, allowing you to emphasize the spaciousness and unity of the room, as well as place accents. You can use one large chandelier of a simple geometric shape, or you can buy many small spotlights and place them around the perimeter of the room.

By the way, it is also possible to combine a large chandelier and several small lamps: the minimalist style doesn’t reject this option. Table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and bedside lamps are also acceptable, but they should be simple and close to the correct geometric shapes.

4. Selection and arrangement of furniture

The ideal option for the minimalist style would be simple and functional furniture without any frills. A built-in wardrobe will provide excellent storage space while remaining almost invisible. The minimalist style itself implies conciseness and rigor, so the furniture is selected in a simple geometric shape. Simple sofas with rectangular backs and coffee tables resembling cubes—such furniture will perfectly fit into the interior of a room designed in a minimalist style.

The kitchen design in a minimalist-style apartment should be simple and clean. If the renovation is done in a studio apartment, the bar counter, which is usually placed on the edge of the kitchen area, should be discreet and serve as a space delimiter but not attract unnecessary attention.

5. Decorative elements

In minimalism, accessories and decorative elements are not the most important thing; there should be very few of them. Windows are decorated with blinds, roller blinds, and Roman blinds are allowed. To decorate the interior and space, you can place vases, paintings in simple frames, figurines, and similar things; the main thing is that all these elements are simple and strict in shape.

Minimalism allows the use of modern technologies in design, allowing you to focus on decorative elements. When decorating rooms, the interior of which is made in a minimalist style, mirrors of various geometric shapes are often used - octagonal, triangular, and hexagonal. In addition, their surfaces can be convex or flat, but in any design, they don’t have frames.

Tables and shelves can be of various shapes with complex intersecting planes. A variety of geometric shapes, a play of symmetry and asymmetry, a disorder of lines - all these are signs of decorative elements suitable for use in a one-bedroom apartment decorated in a minimalist style.

A maximally simplified fireplace can become a decorative element in a minimalist interior. It is important to remember that it should be simple in shape, perhaps even made of monolithic natural stone. Although hanging fireplaces are not cheap, they allow you to create the atmosphere of a science fiction film in the room. Abstract paintings and canvases will fit perfectly into the interior of the apartment: they will help to convey the style and philosophy of minimalism fully.
