THE OPPORTUNITY

As a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, you will perform a variety of ultrasound procedures for inpatients, outpatients, and emergency cases, using advanced imaging technology to capture detailed views of internal organs, tissues, and blood flow. A critical component of this role is proficiency in Breast Ultrasound, including the ability to perform ultrasound-guided biopsies with precision and confidence. Your expertise in sonographic techniques and patient care will contribute directly to accurate and timely medical diagnoses, playing a vital role in supporting clinical decision-making and treatment planning.

• KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
• Supporting and promoting the mission, vision, and values of the hospital in all interactions with patients, staff, and the public, in alignment with the GBGH Code of Conduct.
• Performing high-quality ultrasound examinations for general, obstetric, vascular, and breast imaging in accordance with GBGH protocols and regulatory standards.
• Preparing examination rooms and ultrasound equipment, ensuring compliance with infection prevention and patient safety protocols.
• Reviewing imaging requisitions for accuracy, clinical relevance, and appropriateness; clarifying orders when necessary.
• Explaining procedures clearly and compassionately to patients, obtaining informed consent, and answering questions within the scope of practice.
• Performing routine quality assurance checks on ultrasound equipment and reporting any discrepancies or malfunctions.
• Demonstrating accountability for safe, professional, and ethical behaviour aligned with hospital policies, legislation, and CMRITO standards.
• Participating in the department’s Quality Management Program through daily, weekly, monthly, and annual audits, reporting, and continuous quality improvement.
• Collaborating with Radiologists, Diagnostic Imaging leadership, and the Quality Lead to support accreditation, compliance, and clinical best practices.
• Troubleshooting equipment issues, coordinating preventative maintenance, and maintaining equipment logs to meet safety and regulatory requirements.
• Ensuring accurate acquisition, storage, and documentation of ultrasound images using PACS and other imaging systems.
• Supporting the maintenance and functionality of ultrasound equipment, including coordinating service and repairs as needed.
• Attending team meetings and contributing to discussions focused on process improvement and patient care enhancement.
• Assisting with patient care tasks such as lifting, turning, and positioning, while ensuring dignity and safety are upheld.
• Maintaining accurate documentation including patient demographics, clinical details, imaging requisitions, QA activities, and supply logs.
• Ordering and managing departmental supplies, verifying stock levels, and expediting replenishment as necessary.
• Supporting the orientation and competency assessments of new staff, students, and co-op participants in the diagnostic imaging services areas.
• Adhering to all hospital safety protocols and infection control standards relevant to ultrasound imaging.
• Assisting with departmental operations such as appointment coordination, obtaining lab results, and preparing documentation.
• Demonstrating commitment to professional development through continuous learning, including completion of required eLearning requirements.
• Maintaining a high level of personal health, punctuality, and regular attendance to ensure consistent delivery of patient care.
• Fostering a positive, respectful, and collaborative work environment while upholding patient confidentiality and hospital values at all times.
• Performing other duties as assigned by the Diagnostic Imaging leadership and quality team.
• Monitor image quality during procedures and adjust equipment settings to optimize diagnostic outcomes.
• Assist in preparing preliminary image summaries or reports for radiologist review.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

• Current registration in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) in the sonography specialty required.
• Completion of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography program required.
• Certification with Sonography Canada and/or ARDMS (American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography) preferred.
• Strong knowledge of sonographic anatomy, pathology, and scanning protocols.
• Proficiency in computer use and operating and troubleshooting ultrasound equipment and PACS systems.
• Experience in a clinical or hospital setting is preferred.
• Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification preferred.
• Demonstrated initiative, accountability, and strong organizational skills.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Proven ability to perform imaging accurately, efficiently, and with high attention to detail.
• Experience in general, obstetric, vascular, and breast ultrasound considered an asset.
• Working knowledge of sterile techniques, infection prevention, emergency codes, and workplace safety standards.
• Commitment to ongoing professional development and continuing education in sonography.
• Strong problem-solving, time management, and collaborative teamwork abilities.
• Excellent patient care and communication skills, with the ability to explain procedures clearly and compassionately.
• Reliable attendance and flexibility to work various shifts across GBGH campuses as required.
• Physical ability to perform procedures requiring prolonged standing and equipment handling
• As a partially designated French speaking organization, French verbal and written communication skills are considered an asset.

COMPENSATION

• Hourly rate of pay $36.84 - $50.24, plus a generous vacation allotment in accordance with the OPSEU Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK

Permanent Part Time. As per the OPSEU collective agreement local provisions article 16.06(a), subsequent schedules shall be posted quarterly for a three (3) month period by the fifteenth (15) of the month previous to the period. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the OPSEU collective agreement.
