Reporting to the Nursing Programs Lead and working under general supervision, the Nursing Lab Instructor is responsible for supporting the delivery and facilitation of simulation-based learning and assigned teaching responsibilities across all nursing educational programs within the Department of Health and Wellness Workforce unit. In alignment with the program’s philosophy and educational framework, this role involves implementing the prescribed curriculum through clinical and laboratory instruction, utilizing simulation technologies to enhance learner competence. The Nursing Lab Instructor collaborates closely with Nurse Educators and the Nursing Programs Lead to ensure an integrated and consistent educational experience across clinical, laboratory, and classroom settings. This position contributes to creating a safe, engaging, and learner-centered environment, fostering the development of nursing skills and professional growth in accordance with relevant standards and best practices.

Duties include: Deliver instruction and guide learners in lab, simulation, and clinical settings, ensuring skill development and competency in a safe, supportive environment.  Operate simulation equipment and collaborate with faculty to align teaching with curriculum and best practices.  Prepare, set up, and maintain nursing laboratory and simulation environments to ensure readiness for instructional activities. Facilitate effective student learning in laboratory and simulation settings by delivering instruction on nursing skills, techniques, and procedures. Assess and evaluate student performance in lab, simulation, and clinical exercises using established rubrics and evaluation tools. Assist in the development, organization, and ongoing evaluation of the nursing laboratory curriculum by collaborating with Nursing Program Lead, Nurse Educators and other academic teams.

Support the design of simulation scenarios, learning activities, and instructional materials that align with program objectives and current evidence-based nursing practice. Prepare, coordinate, instruct, and supervise learners during their clinical rotations. Prepare learners for clinical rotations by distributing orientation materials, review site policies and procedures, and assist to ensure all necessary clearances (e.g., immunizations, background checks) are complete. Assist in developing clinical learning objectives which align rotation experiences with curriculum outcomes and communicate expectations to learners.

Contribute to the systematic evaluation and monitoring of learners’ academic and clinical progression to ensure achievement of defined competencies. Maintain accurate records of assessment results, clinical hours, competencies achieved, and areas needing improvement. Promote active participation by learners in setting goals, tracking progress, and reflecting on their learning journey. Other assigned duties as required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) degree from an accredited institution.

Current active registration in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses and Midwives of Prince Edward Island (CRNMPEI). Valid certificate in Basic Life Support – C (BLS-C). Certificate course or national certification in nursing specialty areas such as adult medical-surgical, emergency, or critical care nursing. Valid Prince Edward Island driver’s license.

Demonstrated clinical competence in medical-surgical, emergency, or critical nursing practice. Minimum of three years of recent, continuous clinical experience in the relevant nursing specialty as listed above. The successful candidate must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check prior to commencement of employment.         Other Qualifications Demonstrated experience with educational methodologies and student assessment within clinical environments is preferred.

Successful completion of Simulation Certification, or a willingness to obtain within two years of employment. Proficiency in utilizing educational technologies and simulation laboratory equipment to facilitate optimal learning in both clinical and simulated settings. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, coupled with strong interpersonal abilities. Sound judgment and the capacity to effectively prioritize competing demands while maintaining performance under pressure.

Comprehensive knowledge and application of adult learning theories and pedagogical principles. Evidence of ongoing professional development, demonstrates commitment to maintaining clinical and educational competency. Flexibility to adapt and perform effectively across diverse clinical settings and patient populations. Proven capability to coordinate, supervise, and implement learning activities in both clinical and laboratory contexts.

Demonstrated initiative, creativity, and ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision  Proficient in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office Suite, electronic mail, and internet navigation.  Master’s degree in nursing is an asset.
